Job Description:

The Assistant Quality Director will provide leadership support to the Quality Director to plan, direct, and coordinate the quality assurance, quality control and accreditation programs and practices of the Houston Forensic Science Center.  The incumbent will have full delegated authority to act on the behalf of the division director in his/her absence. Specific duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Provide leadership support to the Quality Director in facilitating processes to receive and maintain accreditation for HFSC, partnering with appropriate managers within the various disciplines and sections. 
  • Formulate and implement quality control and quality assurance policies, ensuring appropriate monitoring efforts to achieve desired quality and production results. 
  • Select and supervise direct reports, providing guidance for indirect hires as appropriate.  Partner with Human Resources in recruitment efforts as appropriate. 
  • Provide direction and guidance to assigned staff members, serving as a mentor and coach to ensure that performance as well as behavioral goals are met.
  • Ensure appropriate training and employee development is available for staff as needed. 
  • Partner with the division director and appropriate staff members in the development and/or revision of standard operating procedures, goals and objectives, techniques, policies and reports.


Experience and Skills:


  • Bachelor’s degree in Forensic Science, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, or a closely related field. Master’s Degree is a plus.
  • Certification in a forensic science discipline or quality-related field is strongly preferred.
  • Training and experience as a forensic accreditation assessor is strongly preferred.


  • Minimum of three (3) years of leadership experience in the supervision of quality staff members in a forensic laboratory environment.  Leading audits, special projects, etc. is considered to be leadership experience. 
  • Minimum seven (7) years direct quality experience in an accredited forensic laboratory with a working knowledge of quality systems, audit concepts and document control.
  • Proven success in a quality-related position may be substituted, year for year, for up to three (3) years of the forensic laboratory experience. 
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications (Outlook, Word, Excel and PowerPoint).
  • Proven knowledge in laboratory quality systems, document control, and conducting audits on an expert level
  • Proven knowledge of ISO and accreditation standards for forensic laboratories



  • Demonstrated skill in effectively utilizing technology and related software applications
  • Demonstrated skills in handling multiple tasks and prioritizing work assignments of self and direct reports
  • Demonstrated ability to make decisions and effectively handle conflict and uncertain situations
  • Demonstrated ability to work with frequent interruptions and changing priorities
  • Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective communications and working relationships with fellow employees, internal customers, and external customers. 
  • Demonstrated ability to proactively address potential nonconformance and to critically determine the cause(s) of nonconformance
