Job Description:

Under general supervision of the Forensic Biology Technical Leader, the Assistant Technical Leader - FBIO will provide oversight to the technical and quality components of the Forensic Biology and DNA Analysis programs, with the specific objective of ensuring compliance with accreditation requirements and statutorily imposed quality assurance standards. Specific duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • In partnership with the Technical Leader and Manager of FBIO, ensure compliance with accreditation requirements and statutorily imposed quality assurance standards.
  • Ensure the methodology and procedures developed and implemented to perform casework are in compliance with established standards.
  • Ensure that the laboratory stays abreast of current technology and laboratory needs are met by proposing future validations.
  • Review validations of new technologies and propose additional testing or summary revisions prior to Technical Leader approval.
  • Support the review and development of standard operating procedures to reflect best practices.
  • Provide support and leadership to FBIO staff members using Lean Six Sigma Principals.
  • Provide leadership to a team of casework scientists, conducting technical reviews to stay abreast of casework and to ensure that the laboratory is consistent in its testing methods and conclusions.
  • Interact with FBIO and HFSC staff, legal and judicial representatives, and police personnel regarding the forensic science aspects of casework.
  • Coordinate standardization initiatives with FBIO Managers and issue "tips" on a regular basis to serve as a reminder to laboratory personnel. Attend and lead mixture discussion meetings to promote standardization in DNA mixture interpretation.
  • Assist with the coordination and implementation of training programs within FBIO.
  • Design, administer and evaluate oral or written exams for training and/or promotion purposes; review training documentation in preparation for Technical Leader approval.
  • Gather and analyze data to answer questions related to previous analysis; assist in creating practice and policy
  • Participate in new-technology implementation teams.
  • Perform casework analysis on a limited basis

Experience and Skills:

MINIMUM EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS

Master’s degree in a biology, chemistry or forensic science-related area from an accredited college or university AND successful completion of twelve (12) semester or equivalent credit hours from a combination of undergraduate and graduate course work covering the following subject areas: biochemistry, genetics, molecular biology, and statistics and/or population genetics, or other subjects which provide a basic understanding of the foundation of forensic DNA analysis. The 12 semester or equivalent credit hours must include at least one graduate level class registering three (3) or more semester or equivalent credit hours. Discipline specific certification strongly preferred.

MINIMUM EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

Six years’ technical experience with human DNA forensic samples is required. Successful completion of the FBI-sponsored auditor training prior to hire or the ability to complete the training within one year of appointment is also required.

  • Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective communication and working relationships with co-workers, customers and the general public
  • Exceptional written communication skills
  • Proficiency with LIMS, MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook.
